Who is Khatu Shyam

Devotees know him as Shyam Baba, Hare ka Sahara – the support of those who have lost. In the legend he is Barbarika, grandson of Bhima, a warrior with three infallible arrows who had vowed to fight for whichever side was losing. Before the Kurukshetra war Krishna, disguised as a Brahmin, asked for his head in charity. Barbarika gave it, and Krishna promised that in Kali Yuga he would be worshipped under Krishna's own name, Shyam.

Tradition says the head surfaced at Khatoo, at the spot that is now Shyam Kund, and that the first temple was raised in 1027 by Roop Singh Chauhan and his wife Narmada Kanwar. The building pilgrims enter today goes back to a reconstruction of 1720.

When it gets crowded

Khatu runs on the lunar calendar. Every Shukla Paksha Ekadashi brings a surge, and two dates tower over the rest: the Phalgun Lakhi Mela in February–March and Shyam Baba's birthday on Dev Uthani Ekadashi in November. During the eight-day mela of 2026 the temple committee counted more than 15 lakh visitors, over 3.5 lakh of them on Ekadashi alone. On those days expect outer parking, long barricaded queues and a walk of several kilometres. Our calendar lists every such day for the months ahead.
